To Kiyotake's surprise, the idea to flip the "M" seen on Mario's Cap to create a "W" received extremely enthusiastic support by the rest of the staff. Kiyotake subsequently discussed his idea with his assistant character designer and co-director Takehiko Hosokawa, with whom Kiyotake normally sought approval from before presenting an idea to the rest of the game's staff. Bluto is physically well-built, motivated by self-interests, and more cunning than his counterpart, Popeye. Kiyotake stated that Wario's relationship to Mario was inspired by the American comic book characters Popeye and Bluto. Wario's physical design and personality was based on the idea that a protagonist should have an arch-rival and nemesis. Before any actual character development, Wario's name was the first thing that was decided on, being derived from the Japanese word "warui" (悪い), meaning "bad". It was initially director Hiroji Kiyotake's idea to introduce Wario as a new character that fits this change in objective, although several rejected characters were presented earlier which no one took a liking to. Their release dates just months after the launch of the Switch Light aren’t a coincidence. The P okémon, Animal Crossing, and Fire Emblem series are predominantly known as handheld titles. However, much of its upcoming offerings was clearly developed for handheld or console play. If Nintendo truly considers the Switch a “home console you can take on the go,” the publisher developed all first-party games as home console titles. The new switch models encourage Nintendo to develop different titles The Switch Lite is marketed as a handheld and, even though the publisher still won’t refer to it as a hybrid, a Switch with a longer battery life is more valuable on the go. With the announcement of the Switch Lite, as well as a new Switch with better battery life, Nintendo can end its charade. Anyone familiar with the industry knows Nintendo’s focus has lied with the Switch since its launch. Those titles don’t require many resources and can be developed relatively quickly. Since 2017, new releases for the 3DS have largely been limited to enhanced ports of older titles like Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn and compilations like WarioWare Gold.
